The University

Founded in the Moscow city of Russia in 1758, First Moscow State Medical University named after I. M. Sechenov (MSMU) is the oldest medical university in the Russian Federation. In 2018, the University celebrated its 260th anniversary, which is remarkable. In honor of Ivan Sechenov, who is known as the "Father of Russian physiology and scientific psychology,” the University is also referred to as Sechenov University. 

As per the 2017 Times Higher Education Ranking, the University was listed in "best-1000" and secured 13th rank out of 24 Russian universities participating in the list. For international students, the University organizes a Preparatory Training Program. In the program, students learn the Russian language. 

Claimed to be the top medical university in Russia, First Moscow State Medical University has become a unique focal point for clinical and medical studies, thanks to its high quality and state-of-the-art research. To carry out its research across medical disciplines, the University has properly segmented research units and laboratories and collaborates with various medical institutions and associations at a global level, including the World Health Organization (WHO). MSMU students benefit from the University’s worldwide research network.

Using modern techniques of teaching like simulation, peer tuition, and visualization of lectures, MSMU delivers exceptional quality medical education.  The University is also a part of the Russian Academic Excellence Project 5-100, an initiative of the Russian Government to strengthen the position of Russian Universities on the world stage.

MSMU Students have access to all kinds of resource material in the University’s library, which is one of the largest holders of scientific medical data and has a collection of more than 3 million medical books and journals. Every year, about 1,20,000 specialists visit the MSMU library, and it also provides access to online resources. 

Presently, the University has about 19,000 students hailing from more than 80 countries and more than 2,100 faculty members. Operating for more than two centuries and a half, MSMU is a pioneer of modern healthcare education in Russia.

While MSMU opened its first teaching hospital in 1805 for clinical training of the students, it established its clinical campus in 1897, comprising 15 teaching hospitals. MSMU clinical campus is kept up-to-date with new technology and equipment and considered one of the largest teaching hospitals in Russia. The renovated clinical facilities have a staff of about 4,000 members and more than 3,000 hospital beds. During clinical training, students get the opportunity to convert their academic learning and University research into clinical practice under expert supervision.  

In Russia, First Moscow State Medical University is a Center of Excellence for Medical Education, Training, and Research and is well-recognized internationally. First Moscow State Medical University is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), United States of America. It is also approved by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and the Medical Council of India (MCI).

MSMU offers a 6-Year MBBS Program and accepts applications for admission from students of Russia as well as other countries. For international students, the program is offered in the English language. Students in India, who have qualified NEET, can apply for direct admission to the MBBS Program of First Moscow State Medical University.
