In honor of Ivan Sechenov, who is known as the "Father of Russian physiology and scientific psychology,” the University is also referred to as Sechenov University.

While MSMU opened its first teaching hospital in 1805 for clinical training of the students, it established its clinical campus in 1897, comprising 15 teaching hospitals. MSMU clinical campus is kept up-to-date with new technology and equipment and considered one of the largest teaching hospitals in Russia. The renovated clinical facilities have a staff of about 4,000 members and more than 3,000 hospital beds. During clinical training, students get the opportunity to convert their academic learning and University research into clinical practice under expert supervision.
