The University

Northern State Medical University is a government medical university situated in Arkhangelsk city of Russia. The University was founded in 1932. It offers a 6-Year Program for MBBS in Russia and accepts applications for admission from local as well as international students. For the first five years, students study general medicine. In the last year of the MBBS program, students need to choose their specialization. 

Presently more than 9,000 students from over 17 countries are studying at Northern State Medical University. The University adopts an apt student-teacher ratio for the personalized learning experience of the students and has a faculty team of about 400 academicians and professors. At Northern State Medical University, usually, a class consists of ten to twelve students.

The University has a well-maintained infrastructure to facilitate modern education with state-of-the-art equipment, computers, and teaching appliances. For the clinical training of the students, the University operates 27 departments established in affiliated hospitals of the city. Clinical training is started in the second year. Clinical departments of the University are equipped with modern technologies and healthcare systems to ensure that students can acquire skillsets required in the modern healthcare world. 

At Northern State Medical University, students are trained to practice in an international setting. Presently, graduates of the University are working in more than 20 countries including global destinations like the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada. 

To facilitate research, the University provides access to various laboratories including biochemical and clinical labs. To help its students stay up-to-date with the latest research, the University publishes its monthly scientific journal “Ekologija Cheloveka.”

The University collaborates with various foreign institutions and participates in international conferences to facilitate sharing of knowledge and research work, student exchange programs, and help international students come to the University to study medicine in Russia. The University got its first batch of international students in 1991 and since then, the number of international students enrolling in the MBBS Program of the University is rising. Since 2006, for international students, Northern State Medical University also facilitates teaching in the English medium. 

To help international students learn the Russian language, the University organizes separate classes through its Department of Russian Language for Foreigners. Besides these classes, this department also organizes various cultural programs for international students to help them adapt to the new country and culture.

Due to its quality education system, the University is well-recognized. Northern State Medical University is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDOMS) and also certified by the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG), United States of America. Northern State Medical University is also approved by the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) and the Medical Council of India (MCI). Students from India who have qualified NEET can apply for direct admission to the MBBS Program of Northern State Medical University.

Student Life

Northern State Medical University offers accommodation for the students in fully-managed dormitories. Rooms are well-furnished and each room is shared by two or three students. In the hostel, students are also provided with common kitchens and laundry rooms. 

To make students familiar with the new culture and help them adapt to the new environment, the University organizes various get-together programs and cultural trips in which local and international students participate together. 

For keeping the students up-to-date with University news and student life, University publishes its monthly magazine titled “Medik-Severa.” Students can share their stories and articles in the magazine. 

The University has a Student Union helping students organize different activities and programs and to offer extended support. Student Union organizes different sports activities, day trips, and other recreational activities for the students. It also takes care of the rights of the students and works to make student life better. 

On the campus, the students have access to all things required for daily student life including book shop, bank, medical store, cafeteria, and restaurant. To take care of the health of the students, the University provides the facility of psychological consultation and appointment to the doctor at an affordable cost.

Arkhangelsk is home to Northern State Medical University students, and the beautiful city is called “the capital of Northern Russia.” On holidays, students can go out to explore the city, including its exceptional wooden architectures, rivers, and museums. In Arkhangelsk, the winter season is long. In January, the average temperature is -13°C while in July, the average temperature is +17°C. So, students enjoy different climate during different seasons. 

During their leisure time, students can play sports, enjoy theatres or concerts, participate in student club activities, or take rest. Northern State Medical University and Arkhangelsk city have everything it takes to make student life delightful and full of learning experiences, and fruitful.
